Why Kit Matters: The Hidden Barriers to Accessing the Outdoors

At Venture Trust, we believe the outdoors is a powerful place for change. It offers space to breathe, to reflect, and to discover strengths people didn’t know they had. But for many of the young people and adults we support, simply getting to the starting point of an outdoor journey can feel overwhelming.

One of the biggest, yet often overlooked, barriers to accessing Scotland’s wild spaces is something many of us take for granted: the right kit.

The Outdoors Isn’t Free When You Don’t Have the Essentials

The people who join our programmes often face complex and challenging circumstances — trauma, poverty, disrupted education, mental ill-health, homelessness, or involvement in the justice system. Many are working hard simply to stay afloat.

Owning a waterproof jacket, sturdy walking boots, or a warm fleece isn’t an option. For some, even affording a woolly hat is difficult.

When you’re living with financial uncertainty or instability, outdoor equipment becomes a luxury — even though the experience it unlocks can be life-changing.

That’s where you come in.

“I didn’t think I belonged outdoors… but having the right kit changed everything.”

Again and again, our participants tell us that receiving proper kit helped them feel more confident, included, and ready for the journey ahead. It removes embarrassment. It removes anxiety. And it replaces both with a sense of pride and possibility.

Kit isn’t just equipment — it’s dignity, safety, and access.

Your Support Makes These Journeys Possible

Throughout December, Venture Trust invites supporters to take part in our Advent(ure) Calendar Appeal — a 24-day journey of giving.

Each day, we’ll reveal a suggested donation amount and a vital piece of kit your money could provide

Each donation helps someone take part in a Venture Trust programme, safely and comfortably. It ensures no one is excluded because of their financial circumstances.

A warm layer means someone feels able to step outside.
A sleeping bag means someone can rest after a challenging day.
A water bottle means someone can stay safe and hydrated on a long hike.
Boots mean someone can walk further than they thought possible.

These are small items with big impact.

Adventure Helps Build Confidence, Resilience and Hope

Once kit is no longer a barrier, participants can focus on what really matters:

  • building confidence
  • developing resilience
  • learning communication and teamwork
  • experiencing moments of calm and reflection
  • feeling connected — to others, to nature, and to themselves
  • imagining a different kind of future

When someone feels safe, warm and prepared, they’re able to fully take part in the deep personal development opportunities our programmes offer.
