Reflections on My First Month as Managing Director

Just over a month ago, I stepped into the role of Managing Director at Venture Trust. It has been a busy, inspiring and humbling few weeks, and I have been reflecting on what makes this organisation so special.

Having worked alongside many of our colleagues, partners and participants over the years, this role feels less like starting something new and more like continuing a journey that already means a great deal to me. Over the past month, I have had the chance to spend time with staff across the organisation, connect with partners and hear more stories from the people who take part in our programmes. Each conversation has reinforced the same thing: Venture Trust is, first and foremost, about people.

We support people facing complex challenges, who at times struggle to engage with mainstream services. With the right support, people can rebuild their lives, flourish and contribute as valued members of their community. That belief sits at the heart of everything we do.

What continues to inspire me most is the courage of the people we work alongside. Whether it is someone learning how to work as part of a team, a young person finding their confidence again, or a woman rediscovering her sense of self, these moments remind us why our work matters.

The outdoors provides a powerful setting for the work we do. Through carefully designed activities and guided conversations, participants are supported to pause, reflect and begin to see themselves differently. Nature helps create the conditions where shared experiences and moments of realisation can unfold.

During this first month, I have also been thinking about the future. Venture Trust has strong foundations: a talented and committed staff team, trusted partnerships and a clear sense of purpose. My focus as Managing Director is to build on those strengths. That means supporting our team, strengthening relationships with partners and funders, and ensuring we continue to deliver high-quality, person-centred services that meet people where they are.

Listening will remain central to how we move forward. Venture Trust has always evolved by listening to participants, staff, partners and communities, and that will continue to shape the decisions we make.

We are entering an important period for the organisation. Demand for support continues to grow, and the challenges people face are becoming more complex. At the same time, there is huge opportunity. Our new strategy, which we will launch at the end of March, will guide us in deepening our impact, strengthening evidence of what works and building long-term sustainability so that more people across Scotland can benefit from our programmes.

I also want to acknowledge the wider Venture Trust community. Our funders, partners, supporters and former participants all play a vital role in making this work possible. Change does not happen in isolation. It happens through collaboration, trust and shared belief in what people can achieve when given the right support.

My first month in this role has been both energising and grounding. I am incredibly proud to be part of Venture Trust and excited about what lies ahead. Most importantly, I am looking forward to continuing this journey alongside our staff, participants and supporters as we work together to create lasting change.
