Transitions to Independent Living
Key information
Age range: 16+
Location: UK
Who it's for: Those who have struggled with insecure housing or who have experienced homelessness.
We have been working with the Foyer Federation for over ten years to develop this programme.
We offer personal development support to young people who are struggling with insecure housing, or who have experienced homelessness. The Transitions to Independent Living programme helps them to find stable pathways to adulthood through a period of transition and upheaval. We help participants develop the skills, confidence and motivation to help establish more sustainable lifestyles, and to take the next step towards a more positive future.
Participants travel to Applecross from across the UK to take part in wilderness personal development journeys, with ongoing support provided by their keyworkers in partnership with Venture Trust.
The programme is highly successful in helping young people to improve their employability, confidence and relationships. The skills and experiences young people gain from the programme create a solid base from which they can go on to access positive destinations and sustain their own home.
- 8 in 10 participants are showing increased self-confidence, and similar numbers are showing increased employability.
- Almost 9 out of 10 participants have increased their stability (and/or accommodation status).
- Well over half of participants have improved their bonds with community members, and are making better use of community services and opportunities (such as libraries, gyms, and doctors' surgeries).
- Almost 90% of participants are in education, employment, training or volunteering.
