Reaching Higher

Key information

Age range: 16-29

Location: Scotland

Who it's for: People who are unemployed and care experienced.

How to apply

Reaching Higher is a partnership between Who Cares? Scotland, Venture Trust and Move On, supporting care experienced, unemployed young people (aged 16-29) to improve their employability skills and ultimately progress into employment which is right for them.

The course consists of a four week employability programme where the participants undertake a range of activities designed to develop their confidence and motivation, and prepare them to take up an employment opportunity.

We are working in partnership with Who Cares? Scotland (lead partner) and Move On to provide job opportunities and further employability training.

How it works:

  • The partners take referrals from interested young people with those selected invited to an information session to find out more. There will be an opportunity to register interest in the available traineeships within each organisation.

  • Participants take part in a four week pre-employability programme, delivered by Venture Trust and Move On. Staff assess the participants for their overall readiness to take up placements within the partner organisations. Venture Trust then leads a three day residential during which participants complete a full working day.

  • The Who Cares? Scotland Employment Co-ordinator works with staff and participants during this four week programme to ensure that expectations are understood and supports the participants in their year long traineeship.

  • Young people are interviewed after completing the four week pre-employability training, and those successful are offered a position. Those who are not ready for employment are supported to move to an alternative, such as further training.

  • Once in position, the selected participants are offered a one year traineeship of 25 hours per week at Living Wage.

  • All participants have monthly peer support meetings with Venture Trust. We continue to work on the participant's own personal development, and look at goals and aspirations beyond the placement.

We aim to to ensure that:

  • 24 young people will gain and sustain meaningful employment for a minimum of 6 months.

  • 12 new employment opportunities will be created for those young people.

  • 40 young people will complete the four week pre-employability programme.
