Closed programme: Moving On Malawi

  • Moving On Malawi

Key information

Age range: 14-18

Location: Lilongwe, Malawi

Who it's for: Young men in Kachere Reformatory Centre

Between 2011 and 2013, Venture Trust's Moving On - Malawi programme reduced reoffending among young men and boys released from Kachere Juvenile Prison, Lilongwe.

We provided participants with skill development opportunities in consequential thinking, HIV/AIDs awareness and positive goal setting, through training and support whilst in Kachere. Our links with other local organisations prepared inmates for independent living, broadened the range of education and employment opportunities available, and guided young men into positive destinations on release.

At the end of 2013 we handed over the Moving On: Malawi programme to our local partners. For more information about this handover, see our news page.

The overwhelming majority of young men and boys in Kachere took up our programme of support, and recorded some excellent outcomes.

  • Over 9 in 10 participants showed increased confidence.
  • 8 in 10 improved their behaviour.
  • Almost 90% of young men are showed a reduced risk of reconviction.
  • Of those released from prison, three quarters reached a positive destination.
