‘Muli Bwanji’ from the warm heart of Africa!
Venture Trust's Moving On - Malawi programme is designed to reduce reoffending among young men and boys released from Kachere Juvenile Prison, Lilongwe. On leaving Kachere, young men often find themselves displaced from their families and communities, and with very poor prospects for employment or education. Without support, many are at risk of falling into patterns of (re)offending, disadvantage and poverty.
We provide participants with skill development opportunities in consequential thinking, HIV/AIDs awareness and positive goal setting, through training and support whilst in Kachere. Our links with other local organisations prepare inmates for independent living, broaden the range of education and employment opportunities available, and guide young men into positive destinations on release.
The overwhelming majority of young men and boys in Kachere have taken up our programme of support, and have recorded some excellent early outcomes.
- Over 9 in 10 participants are showing increased confidence.
- 8 in 10 have improved their behaviour.
- Almost 90% of young men are showing a reduced risk of reconviction.
- Of those who've already been released from prison, three quarters have already reached a positive destination.
