"Nothing Compares to the simple pleasure of riding a bike" John F Kennedy.
“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” Albert Einstein.
If you agree with JFK and Einstein you may want to join in biggest pedal power event in Scotland of 2019 (more than 6,000 cyclists took part in 2018). What's more, this will be your last chance to take part in this iconic Glasgow-Edinburgh closed-road cycle, as Pedal For Scotland will evolve into inclusive, free, local events across Scotland from 2020.
By taking part in the final Pedal for Scotland event on behalf of Venture Trust you'll also be supporting young and vulnerable people in Scotland to change their lives. Venture Trust's 2019/20 programmes include Cashback Change Cycle which enables young people learn skills for work, whilst building their own bicycle for use recreationally, and to support travel to work.
Ready to cycle? Take on Pedal for Scotland and choose between 2 distances. The Classic Challenge 45 mile route and The Big Belter 100 mile sportive route. Both rides start and end together travelling between Glasgow to Edinburgh.
For the less confident cyclist there is a shorter, traffic-free, family friendly Wee Jaunt cycle of 10 miles from Linlithgow to Edinburgh.
Ian Patterson, one of our Funding & Contracts Officers (the cyclist in red, below), has taken part in the event an extraordinary 6 times and is doing it again this year! Here's what he told us about it,
"It’s not a race, it’s a fun, if sometimes, hard challenge, made more enjoyable because the others doing it are just a wide range of people, who are taking part because it’s a challenge from which they can make money for the charity of their choice. The atmosphere throughout the event is amazing from start to finish, adding to the fun during the ride and the sense of achievement when you finish."
The only advice Ian would give is not be worry if you’ve never done a cycle event, "Pedal for Scotland is certainly not only for 'serious' cyclists - there will be loads of people doing it for the first time, and it's really well organised" says Ian.
"PS, the cakes and food at the rest stops are excellent, so whilst the route it can be a little hard in a few places, you can treat yourself for your efforts and the facilities at the finish are very good."
